  1. I just discovered the Jenson Marching Band series of records at a thrift store yesterday. I know they did a marching band arrangement of "Pac-Man Fever". Does it happen to appear on this record? Thanks.

  2. No, unfortunately, it doesn't. I'll have to keep an eye out for that one. In addition to Jenson, there were a few other sheet music publishing companies that put out sampler albums with equally amusing results. Here's another example: http://othersideofmusic.blogspot.com/2010/05/charter-jazz-rock-ensemble-and-chamber.html

  3. Oh my, that is, um, something. Thanks for getting back to me. I know it was available on cassette, but band directors had to order it, so I figure the odds of finding it are pretty bad. I've never seen it on eBay. I got the sheet music from eBay, but auctions for it were few and far between. I can make a MIDI out of what I have, but that's a long process. Maybe it's on the '82 album. I've got a query in at another blog about that.

  4. I was looking through my old records, and I found my jensons best of 1977 marching band, but it is cracked, I was wondering if there was anyway I could get a copy of this as it was from my senior year (1977-78). Plese email me if you have it or know of where i could get it
    Thanks

  5. I don't have the "Best of '77" album although I always keep my eyes open for these and other similar albums. Since these albums were not commercially available, I imagine that the pressings were limited. I wish you luck in your search.

  20. I have a lot of the Jenson albums, but am missing the 1985 Marching Band LP. It should be a double album. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE email me at brc031@gmail.com if you can send me mp3s or if you have sheet music for Higgin's "Hill Where the Lord Hides" or "Firestorm". Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. By the way ... I have the following and can forward mp3s to anyone who needs.

    Jenson 80
    Jenson 83
    Jenson 84 (summer edition)
    Jenson 85 (summer edition)
    Jenson 86

The summer editions were single lps and dont have the expanded selection the double lps do.

BTW, I am fortunate to say that in my high school days, Bill Raxdale and Bob Cotter ran my Band Camp my senior year. It was an honor. I have photos of each. I have a pic of Raxdale cozying up to my girlfriend in 85.

    Thanks!

    2. Bob Cotter is one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. When I was the director of the Carolina band, his son Thomas was one of my first drum majors. I knew Bob’s Music from high school when I was interested in arranging, my band director suggested I write to some of them and ask for help. Not only did ALL Of them… Jaybo Cook, John Higgins, Bob Cotter, will wrap… Take the time to look over my scores and give feedback, I remember vividly receiving a cassette tapes in the mail from Bob where he sat down and played things for me so I could actually hear what I had done wrong and what he would suggested I do to correct it. What a wonderful human.

BTW- Interesting side note. I found a score on eBay of Downey's NY Fantasy from the 81' album. Always admired that tune and arrangement. I have looked for it since 2003 when I was a Sr. in high school. Finally found it yesterday

Bill, I'm looking for the name of a percussion feature that is likely on teh '81 record -- mostly a mallet feature, kind of rag-timey style.

Can you tell me what was on this album in the percussion feature category?

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey Kevin,
There is a cut called "Birdland" that is a rag-timey kind of percussion track. Hope this helps.

DEAR BOB CALLICUTT: I have a HUGE collection of Jensen Marching Band promo recordings (1983 thru the early-90s), BUT they're all on CASSETTE (and I played the p!ss out of them)...so none of them play correctly anymore (magnetic print-through has occurred). May I PLEASE somehow get MP3 recordings of the (complete?) Jensen 1983 albums? Or, if it would be easier, an audio CD burn of Jensen MB 1983?? There were just SOOOOOO many awesome arrangements in every series offered that year that I still to this day find myself humming or hearing in my head a track from 1983. Does your offer of MP3s, etc. still stand? (My work e-mail: ariley@semo.edu) THANK YOU !!!!

  29. gbrozak , do you still have Jenson marching band albums available? I am looking for '80, '81' '82, '83, and '84. Let me know -email is kevsten@aol.com.
A handful of songs (La SuerteDe Los Tontos comes to mind) that are still in print (not many though), have a sound file to play at halleonard.com in the Band Orchestra section under Marching Band. Hal Leonard was of course Jenson's main music publishing competition. Hal Leonard bought Jenson Publishing in Sept 1989. Jenson also launched a record label called Dark Orchid Records originally to showcase the talents of composer/arranger Sammy Nestico. Besides selling the publishing business to Hal Leonard, Dark Orchid Records was bought by Palo Alto Records
